Lifeline vs. Low-Cost Internet Plans: Which Cuts Your Bill More?
Phone and internet bills often creep up after a promo ends. This FAQ explains the two biggest ways low- and moderate-income households lower them: the federal Lifeline discount and internet providers' own low-cost plans. It applies nationwide, including Florida.
What is the USAC Lifeline program?
Lifeline is a federal FCC program, run by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), that lowers the monthly cost of phone or home internet for eligible households. The standard discount is up to $9.25 per month (up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands). One Lifeline benefit is allowed per household.
Who qualifies?
Households at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or where someone takes part in SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit. Tribal assistance programs also qualify on Tribal lands.
Is the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) still around?
No. The ACP stopped taking new enrollments in February 2024 and ended in June 2024 when its funding ran out. Lifeline is still active, and many providers keep their own low-income plans.
Lifeline or a provider's low-cost plan: which saves more?
It depends on your address and provider. Lifeline is a fixed discount on a participating carrier's plan; a provider's low-income plan sets a lower price directly. Compare the final monthly price of each. Some Lifeline-participating providers let you apply the Lifeline discount on top of their own low-cost plan. Prices and eligibility for provider plans change, so confirm current terms with the provider.
How do I apply?
Apply through the Lifeline National Verifier at lifelinesupport.org or through a participating company. Have proof of income or program participation ready, pick a provider that serves your area, and recertify every year.
